I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to stop the Trump administration's announced plan for door-to-door ICE operations across the country. This policy represents a dangerous escalation that threatens the constitutional rights of all Americans, regardless of immigration status.
Vice President JD Vance announced this expansion just hours after ICE agents fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, an unarmed US citizen and widowed mother of three, in Minneapolis. Video evidence contradicts the administration's claim that she attempted to run over an agent, showing instead that she was attempting to drive away and only accelerated after shots were fired. Despite this tragedy, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem assured the public that citizens have nothing to fear, yet ProPublica reports that at least 170 US citizens have been wrongly detained in immigration custody since January.
The Fourth Amendment protects all people in this country from unreasonable searches and seizures, with the strongest protections applying to our homes. Door-to-door operations without judicial warrants violate these fundamental rights. Growing numbers of people, many Latinx, report being targeted and detained based solely on their race. Hours after Good was killed, agents at Minneapolis airport demanded identification from a Somali Uber driver, with one agent saying he didn't believe the man was a US citizen because of his accent.
ICE's budget is set to triple in 2026 under Republican budget legislation, funding a wartime recruitment strategy to hire up to 10,000 new officers with minimal training. The administration has pledged to strip citizenship from 200 naturalized citizens per month, a tenfold increase, and a Department of Homeland Security post glorified the idea of 100 million deportations, which would require targeting naturalized and US-born citizens.
I urge you to publicly oppose door-to-door ICE operations, demand accountability for the killing of Renee Nicole Good, and introduce or support legislation that protects Fourth Amendment rights and prevents immigration enforcement from targeting people based on race or accent. Our constitutional protections must apply to everyone.
