Protect Social Security Administration benefits access

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is the government agency responsible for administering Social Security retirement and disability benefits for over 72 million vulnerable Americans. However, the DOGE administration's planned workforce cuts of up to 50% and closure of hundreds of local SSA offices severely endanger this critical social safety net program. Slashing staff and shuttering assistance centers will disrupt the SSA's ability to process claims, resolve errors, and ensure benefit payments reach those who rely on them for their livelihood and well-being. These draconian measures disproportionately harm society's most vulnerable populations, including the elderly, disabled, impoverished, those with low literacy, and those without computer access or skills. Former SSA Commissioner Martin O'Malley warns that these cuts could trigger a "total system collapse" within 30-90 days, leaving millions at risk of missing their benefit payments - a scenario unprecedented in the agency's 80-year history. It is imperative that Congress acts swiftly to protect the Social Security Administration from DOGE's catastrophic downsizing plans. Any budget or spending bill must restore full staffing and operations at the SSA and reopen closed regional offices to maintain this vital social safety net. The well-being of millions of Americans hinges on the continued, uninterrupted delivery of these essential benefits. Failing to intervene will have devastating consequences for our nation's most vulnerable citizens.
