Halt ICE Funding By Any Means

To: Sen. Baldwin, Sen. Johnson, Rep. Pocan

From: A constituent in Madison, WI

January 25

The decision by congressional Democrats to utilize a government shutdown as a means to halt further funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) represents a necessary and courageous moral stand. In the face of an administration determined to escalate mass deportations and aggressive enforcement, the power of the purse has become the last remaining constitutional check to protect the nation’s immigrant communities. The flashpoint in Minneapolis underscores why this stand is essential. When federal agencies operate with a mandate that prioritizes maximum enforcement over community stability, they erode the trust essential to public safety. Local leaders in cities like Minneapolis have long argued that aggressive ICE presence makes residents fear interacting with any form of government, including local police and health services. By withholding funding, Democrats are not merely engaging in a budget dispute; they are defending the social fabric of American cities against federal overreach that treats neighbors as targets. Furthermore, the humanitarian stakes have reached a breaking point. Under the current administration’s "zero-tolerance" posture, ICE has been transformed into a tool of mass displacement. Funding the agency at its requested levels effectively subsidizes the trauma of family separation and the expansion of detention facilities that have been plagued by reports of poor conditions. A shutdown, while disruptive to federal operations, is a proportional response to an agency that many believe has lost its moral compass. It forces a national debate on whether taxpayer dollars should be used to fuel a "deportation machine" or if they should be redirected toward more humane, community-based solutions. Critics often decry shutdowns as political theater, but for millions of families living in the shadow of enforcement, this is a matter of survival. The use of this "nuclear option" signals that the dignity of human beings is not a negotiable line item. By refusing to fund an unchecked enforcement apparatus, Democrats are asserting that some principles, such as the right to due process and the protection of vulnerable families, are more important than a temporary administrative pause. It is a vital exercise of legislative leverage intended to demand a more just and compassionate immigration system. Stop this violence. Take a stand.
