CONGRESS RETURN TO SESSION NOW!
To: Sen. Schmitt, Rep. Bell, Sen. Hawley

April 10
Dear Republicans, I am writing to express my outrage at the refusal to allow debate on the House floor today regarding the removal of President Trump. This is not a procedural dispute. It is a failure of constitutional duty at a moment of genuine national and international risk. Congress does not have the luxury of silence in times of crisis. Under Article I of the Constitution, it has an obligation to confront threats to national security and to exercise oversight without hesitation. Refusing to return to session or permit open deliberation, particularly amid escalating global tensions, is not neutrality. It is abdication. What occurred on the floor today was indefensible. Rep. Chris Smith, acting as speaker pro tempore, convened the chamber and then adjourned it within minutes without recognizing members or allowing any debate. That action was not a matter of efficiency or scheduling. It was the deliberate suppression of discussion. Silencing the House in this way, at a time that demands scrutiny and accountability, reflects a conscious decision to avoid responsibility rather than meet it. At the same time, recent statements by Trump that appear to threaten catastrophic violence on a civilizational scale demand immediate and serious attention. This is not rhetorical excess that can be ignored. When a president invokes the destruction of an entire civilization, it raises urgent questions about judgment, stability, and the potential consequences of unchecked power. To refuse even to debate these issues is to send a dangerous message that accountability is optional and that political loyalty outweighs constitutional obligation. That message weakens Congress, undermines the system of checks and balances, and erodes public trust in the most basic promise of American governance: that no individual is above the law. There is no constitutional principle that justifies avoiding debate under these circumstances. There is no precedent that excuses silence in the face of potential threats of this magnitude. The role of Congress is not to shield political allies from scrutiny, but to confront difficult questions directly and in full view of the American people. History will not regard inaction kindly. The choice to shut down proceedings rather than engage them will be seen for what it is: cowardly and a failure to uphold the responsibilities entrusted to you. I urge you to reverse this course immediately. Return to session. Allow debate. Fulfill your constitutional duty. NOW!
