Please oppose Matt Gaetz as Attorney General
To: Rep. Clark

We've watched Trump select unqualified, blind loyalists for his cabinet, but his pick of Matt Gaetz is the most ridiculous.
Gaetz stands out even in an increasingly Trumpian Congress for his attacks on the FBI, willingness to engage in conspiracy theories and intense fealty to Trump.
God forbid if he becomes attorney general, Gaetz would have oversight of — and will be tasked with getting rid of — federal investigations into Trump. Gaetz will help the president use the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute his political opponents, which Trump has repeatedly said he would do.
The bipartisan House Ethics Committee this year announced that it was expanding an investigation into allegations that Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct, used drugs and accepted improper gifts.
Simply put, we cannot make this criminal the top law enforcement officer in the country. Federal prosecutors have been investigating Gaetz for years in a sex-trafficking investigation for his involvement with a 17-year-old and whether he had paid for sex or paid for women to travel across state lines for sex, which would violate trafficking laws.
While Trump was in office, Gaetz preemptively sought a pardon from him in case he were charged. He was elected in 2016, the same year Trump first won the presidency, and since then has pushed baseless theories that antifa was responsible for the January 6, attack on the Capitol, invited a Holocaust denier to a State of the Union address and called abortion rights protesters “ugly.”
And the House Ethics Committee investigation into Gaetz remained ongoing, which is obviously why Gaetz so suddenly resigned from Congress. The committee's report was about to be made public - and this is clearly a document every Senator should be allowed to read.
