Protect Us from financial abuse- defend the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt

February 21

Im writing as a constituent to express serious concern about ongoing efforts to weaken or dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Recent actions by federal leadership have halted enforcement, stopped investigations, and cut off funding to the agency responsible for protecting Americans from predatory financial practices. Courts have already intervened in some cases, finding attempts to defund the bureau legally questionable and ordering funding to continue while litigation proceeds. The CFPB exists because ordinary people cannot realistically fight banks, lenders, credit bureaus, and financial corporations on their own. The bureau enforces rules involving mortgages, credit cards, overdraft fees, discrimination in lending, and fraud — protections created after the 2008 financial crisis to prevent another collapse. When oversight is suspended, the burden shifts to individual citizens and state regulators, creating inconsistent enforcement and leaving families vulnerable to scams and abusive practices. This should not be a partisan issue. Regardless of political affiliation, Americans deserve:
• Honest loans
• Accurate credit reporting
• Protection from fraud
• Accountability for large financial institutions I respectfully ask you to: 1 Publicly support maintaining the CFPB’s independence and funding 2 Oppose attempts to shut down or paralyze federal consumer protection enforcement 3 Ensure Congress — not executive interpretation alone — determines whether a congressionally created agency continues to exist Financial markets only function when the public trusts them. Weakening consumer protections does not create freedom — it creates risk for families and instability for the economy.
