Thank Governor Newsom for Protecting Immigrant Rights and Transparency
To: Gov. Newsom
From: A constituent in San Mateo, CA
September 23, 2025
Governor Newsom's recent actions to protect immigrant communities and increase transparency in law enforcement operations are commendable and necessary steps towards a more just California. By signing a package of legislation that includes banning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from covering their faces during operations, you have taken a bold stance against the intimidation tactics that have terrorized immigrant families for far too long.
The requirement for ICE agents to unmask during operations, with reasonable exceptions for undercover work and medical necessity, is a groundbreaking move that sets a new standard for accountability. This law, set to take effect in January, will help ensure that law enforcement actions are conducted openly and responsibly, reducing the fear and anxiety that many immigrant communities have experienced.
Your characterization of previous federal immigration policies as "terrifying" and reminiscent of a "dystopian sci-fi movie" resonates deeply with the experiences of many Californians. By signing these five bills into law, four of which took immediate effect, you have demonstrated California's commitment to protecting the rights of all residents, regardless of their immigration status.
Immigrants are indeed the backbone of our state and nation, contributing significantly to our economy, culture, and communities. Your actions affirm that California values these contributions and will stand up against "authoritarian tendencies" that threaten our diverse population.
I urge you to continue this vital work by implementing these new laws swiftly and effectively. Please ensure that law enforcement agencies receive proper training on these new requirements and that there are robust mechanisms in place to monitor compliance and address any violations.
Thank you for your leadership in making California a beacon of hope and justice for immigrant communities. Your actions remind us that in the face of federal policies that seek to marginalize and intimidate, states can and must take action to protect the rights and dignity of all their residents.
