I am writing to urge your office to consider adopting policies similar to Chicago’s newly created “ICE‑free zones,” where federal immigration enforcement activities are restricted from using public spaces like schools, libraries, parks, and unwilling private businesses without valid warrants.
Chicago’s executive order designates city‑owned property and private institutions (by opt‑in) as off‑limits for ICE staging and operations, reinforcing due process, community safety, and constitutional protections.
Such a policy in our state or city could:
• Help protect immigrant communities from fear and overreach
• Clarify that our public spaces are not bases for federal immigration raids
• Provide legal mechanisms to challenge overstep or misuse of federal authority
• Encourage community cooperation with policing rather than terrorizing civil society
I respectfully ask that you:
1. Explore drafting legislation or an executive order to establish “ICE‑free zones” in state or local government‐controlled spaces.
2. Engage state attorneys general and legal counsel to ensure that such protections withstand federal challenge, and to prepare for legal defense.
3. Hold public hearings or consult with immigrant rights advocates to ensure protections are practical, enforceable, and aligned with local law enforcement cooperation.
4. Communicate clearly to federal authorities that this region will not tolerate unchecked abuses of power.
Please respond with your views on moving forward with such protections, including any steps your office plans to take.
Thank you for considering this request to safeguard civil rights, fairness, and dignity in our communities.
