Support Including Renewable Energy in US Defense Spend to Improve Nat’l Security

Today I’m writing to urge you to support the inclusion of renewable energy investments in US Defense spending calculations, specifically within the 1.5% pledge for critical infrastructure. This idea, put forth by a group of retired senior military personnel from Europe, recognizes the critical link between energy security and national defense. It would work for the US as well. The climate crisis poses a significant threat to our national security, and our dependence on fossil fuels makes us vulnerable to price volatility and supply disruptions during conflicts, by adversarial nations that in no way reflect our values. By investing in renewable energy as part of our defense strategy, we can enhance our nation's resilience and reduce our vulnerability to potential aggressors like Russia. Renewable energy sources offer several strategic advantages over traditional fossil fuels. They are more dispersed and less susceptible to targeted attacks compared to centralized gas supplies. This decentralization improves our energy sovereignty and creates a more robust defense infrastructure. I urge you to advocate for this proposal, and learn from the NATO idea to work towards its legislation. This approach will not only strengthen our national security but also contribute to our efforts to combat climate change, creating a win-win situation for both our defense capabilities and our environment. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
