An Open Letter

To: Sen. Murray, Sen. Cantwell, Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez

From: A constituent in Vancouver, WA

February 10

I am writing to urge you: do not compromise. Hold the line. Senator Chris Murphy said it clearly: "People are going to get killed. More people are going to get killed if we continue to fund DHS." He is correct. To Senators Murray and Cantwell: Thank you for your leadership. You stripped DHS from the January package and forced these negotiations. Even moderate senators like Angus King are now saying they cannot in good conscience vote to fund ICE. The American people are with you. Sixty-five percent say ICE has gone too far. Do not accept a weak compromise now. To Representative Gluesenkamp Perez: Your Democratic colleagues in the Senate are holding firm. Senator Murphy, Senator King, and others understand that reforms without enforcement mechanisms are meaningless. Body cameras that can be turned off, warrant requirements that can be ignored, identification numbers on agents who operate in masks—these are not solutions. Join your Senate colleagues. Vote NO on February 13. The White House counterproposal was rejected as "incomplete and insufficient." That is the correct response. ICE has violated nearly 100 court orders in January alone. Ninety-two percent of ICE's detention growth has been people with no criminal convictions. This agency operates in deliberate contempt of due process and the Constitution. No compromise. No continuing resolution. No more time for an administration negotiating in bad faith. Vote NO on any package that includes ICE funding.
