Take the Next Step to Protect Our Waters and Ban Shark Fishing in the State

To: Rep. Berger-Girvalo, Gov. Lamont, Sen. Maher

From: A constituent in Ridgefield, CT

April 25

It is imperative that Connecticut takes swift action to protect sharks from the cruel and unsustainable practice of shark finning. The removal of fins from live sharks and discarding their bodies at sea is not only inhumane but also disrupts the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. Sharks play a vital role as apex predators, and their population decline can have cascading effects throughout the oceanic food chain. Moreover, the demand for shark fin soup perpetuates this unethical trade, which has already driven numerous shark species to the brink of extinction. As a responsible state, we must prioritize the preservation of our marine resources and align our policies with ethical and environmental principles. I urge you to support legislation that comprehensively bans the possession, trade, and consumption of shark fins within Connecticut's borders, sending a clear message that our state stands firmly against this destructive practice.
