Trump’s Own Intel Director Said Iran Was No Threat. Where Does Texas Stand?

To: Lt. Gov. Patrick, Sen. Zaffirini, Gov. Abbott, Rep. Flores

From: A verified voter in Austin, TX

March 19

Governor Abbott controls the Texas National Guard. Texas Guard resources have been committed to federal border and immigration operations for years under Operation Lone Star, and as the Iran war expands, pressure on Guard units to fill federal support roles will grow. The legislature has had little say in any of it. The Iran war cost $16.5 billion in its first 12 days, with no congressional authorization. Trump’s own counterterrorism director resigned on March 17, 2026, stating Iran posed no imminent threat. Thirteen Americans are dead. The Pentagon is preparing an emergency spending request that will pull from every available federal resource, including National Guard capacity across the country. Texas legislators cannot end a federal war. You can demand that Congress authorize it before another Texan in uniform is committed to it. I am asking you to introduce a resolution calling on Congress to pass a formal Authorization for Use of Military Force before any further escalation, and to require legislative transparency before the Governor commits Texas Guard units to future federal military operations.
