Dear Representative
I am writing to demand that you act to stop the Department of Justice's assault on women's health care.
Attorney General Todd Blanche told the Senate this summer that the administration wants to reinstate restrictions on mifepristone, a drug the FDA approved in 2000 and that is used both for abortion and for miscarriage care.
In federal court, DOJ attorneys have refused to affirm the drug's safety, despite more than two decades of data and the support of major medical organizations, including the American Medical Association.
Reports now indicate DOJ is preparing to revive the 1873 Comstock Act to block medication by mail once the midterms are over.
At the same time, enforcement of the FACE Act, which protects patients and providers from violence at clinics, has been sharply curtailed.
We have decades of science and research showing what happens when women are denied adequate reproductive care: delayed miscarriage management, dangerous infections, preventable hospitalizations, and preventable deaths.
This is not a matter of opinion. It is documented medical evidence.
You want Americans having more
Babies? Make it safe to be pregnant.
Officials who refuse to support science-based medical care should be ashamed.
None of them are practicing physicians, and none of them have any business in the doctor's office.
Medical decisions belong to patients and their doctors, not to political appointees.
I am demanding of you to:
• Hold oversight hearings requiring the Attorney General to explain, under oath, DOJ's position on mifepristone's safety and any plans to enforce the Comstock Act
• Support legislation clarifying that the Comstock Act does not apply to FDA-approved medications
• Demand full restoration of FACE Act enforcement
• Publicly defend the FDA's evidence-based approval of mifepristone
Women's lives depend on medicine guided by evidence and make up half of the electorate. I expect you to defend it.
Sincerely,
A Voting Constituent
