As you know, a group of eminent American psychiatrists led by Dr. Bandy Lee has repeatedly urged the Congress to invoke the 25th Amendment in order to protect our country from the actions of our current president. It is patently obvious to any thinking person that this president suffers from serious mental illness that clearly meets the threshold of disability as defined in the language of the amendment. Just because the drafters of the amendment did not contemplate that a person exhibiting clear symptoms of psychopathy would ever be elected does not mean that psychopathology is not a disability. I urge you in the strongest possible terms to listen to the mental health professionals’ warning about the dangers to our country and the world of Trump’s continuance in office. The so-called Goldwater Rule, often cited to silence psychiatrists from discussing their observations and concerns about public figures’ mental health absent an in-person examination, is a nicety that must give way to the immediate crisis that exists today for the safety of the entire world. Please support the immediate invocation of the 25th Amendment to remove this dangerous person from the most powerful position of power in the world. Our very existence depends on it!
