Please Oppose the Save Act and Protect Texas Voters
To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz
From: A constituent in Iola, TX
March 24
I am writing to you as an independent voter in Texas to urge you to oppose the SAVE Act and related proposals. I believe election integrity matters, and I recognize that a majority of Americans support voter ID laws. However, this bill goes far beyond voter ID—it requires proof of citizenship, which is a very different and more burdensome standard that risks harming eligible voters across our state.
The SAVE Act would require documents like a passport or certified birth certificate to register or update voter registration. While that may sound reasonable, in practice it creates barriers for millions of Texans.
Many citizens do not have ready access to a passport or a certified birth certificate. Seniors, rural residents, and lower-income Texans are especially affected. Obtaining these documents can require time, money, and travel to distant offices—challenges that are very real in a state as large as Texas.
This bill would also disproportionately impact married women and others who have changed their names. If a current ID does not exactly match a birth certificate, voters could be denied registration unless they provide additional documents, such as marriage certificates, which many people do not have readily available.
Military families, veterans, and those displaced by natural disasters, would also face new hurdles—groups that have demonstrated strong commitment to this country.
Importantly, this is not a partisan issue. These barriers would affect Republican, Independent, and Democratic voters alike—especially in rural communities.
We already have systems to verify voter eligibility, and non-citizen voting is extremely rare. This legislation risks disenfranchising far more eligible voters than it could ever prevent.
I ask that you support policies that protect both election integrity and voter access. The SAVE Act does not strike that balance.
Please stand for all Texans by opposing this legislation.
