Demand for Compliance with the Rule of Law and Due Process

To: Rep. Feenstra, Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley

From: A verified voter in Ames, IA

April 15

I am writing to you as a concerned citizen deeply troubled by the actions surrounding the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia and the blatant disregard for due process and judicial authority demonstrated by both U.S. and Salvadoran officials. Despite an immigration judge’s ruling barring Mr. Abrego Garcia's removal to El Salvador and a clear directive from the Supreme Court affirming the illegality of his deportation, the United States government allowed him to be sent to a Salvadoran prison—reportedly as a result of an “administrative error.” Yet, high-level Trump administration officials, including White House adviser Stephen Miller, have contradicted that claim and dismissed it as intentional, raising serious questions about the integrity of this process. Even more alarming is the Oval Office exchange between former President Trump and El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, during which Mr. Bukele mocked the notion of returning Mr. Abrego Garcia, despite the Supreme Court’s order. These comments not only insult our judicial system, but they also defy the constitutional balance of powers upon which this nation was built. Further statements from Marco Rubio and others, suggesting that the courts do not hold the authority to direct foreign policy, indicate a dangerous erosion of the respect traditionally afforded to our legal institutions. The Executive Branch's obligation to uphold and enforce the law is not optional—it is foundational. Let me be clear: Mr. Abrego Garcia has not been charged with any crime in the United States or El Salvador. The allegation tying him to gang activity has been found to rest on a single, uncorroborated claim, further discrediting the justification for his removal and current detention. The Supreme Court has ordered the U.S. government to “take all available steps to facilitate the return of Abrego Garcia to the United States.” Yet, weeks later, little to no substantive progress has been made. This inaction and open defiance of the court undermine the very principle of due process and the legitimacy of our democracy. I respectfully urge you to: 1. Demand immediate compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling and transparency regarding efforts to return Mr. Abrego Garcia. 2. Conduct oversight hearings to investigate the circumstances of his deportation and detainment. 3. Hold accountable any officials who knowingly circumvented court orders or misrepresented the facts to the public or the judiciary. This is not a partisan issue—it is a matter of constitutional fidelity, human rights, and the rule of law. If court rulings can be disregarded at will, then no American’s rights are secure. Thank you for your time and attention to this urgent matter. I trust you will uphold your duty to defend justice, accountability, and the democratic foundations of our nation.
