I am writing to express my grave concern regarding the recent arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan by federal agents. This unprecedented action represents a troubling overreach that threatens the independence of our judiciary and the constitutional separation of powers.
The criminal charges against Judge Dugan for alleged obstruction during immigration enforcement activities in her courtroom set a dangerous precedent. Our constitutional system depends on judges being able to maintain order in their courtrooms without fear of federal prosecution for their decisions.
This arrest appears to be an intimidation tactic that undermines judicial independence and threatens the constitutional rights of all Americans to due process. Federal agents entering courtrooms to make arrests already creates a chilling effect on access to justice for vulnerable populations.
I strongly urge you to investigate this matter and use your oversight authority to ensure that our constitutional principles are upheld. The Department of Justice must respect the independence of state courts and the critical role judges play in our democracy.
Our Constitution established co-equal branches of government for good reason. Please stand against this alarming federal overreach.
