Strip Voter ID Provisions from H.R. 7008 and Cover the President and Vice President

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff

From: A verified voter in Pasadena, CA

July 23

The Senate must strip the voter ID provisions from H.R. 7008 and send a clean insider trading ban back to the House. Republicans attached election law changes to a popular ethics reform specifically to force Democrats into a difficult vote — Rep. Seth Magaziner called it an attempt to "trick people" into supporting voter suppression. Don't let it work. The voter ID requirements mirror the SAVE America Act, which the Bipartisan Policy Center found would be more restrictive than any state-level ID law currently in existence — all to address noncitizen voting, a problem that is already rare. Even Democrats who voted yes, like Reps. Jared Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, explicitly criticized these provisions and called on the Senate to strip them. The stock trading ban has genuine bipartisan support on its own merits — but the current version also exempts the president and vice president, which is a glaring loophole. Any serious ethics reform must cover them too. Pass a clean bill that bans congressional and executive stock trading alike. Kill the voter ID attachment.
