An Open Letter

To: Gov. Mills

From: A constituent in South Portland, ME

March 8

I respectfully urge you to use the authority of your office to protect constitutional rights and the rule of law within our state. Specifically, I ask that you direct state agencies to review their contracting relationships and cease entering new contracts or renew existing contracts with corporations that provide material support for unconstitutional surveillance, unlawful detention, or enforcement operations carried out in defiance of court orders. I also urge you to request that the state treasurer review public investments and consider divestment from companies materially involved in such activities. States have both the authority and responsibility to ensure that public funds and contracts do not support actions that undermine constitutional principles or civil liberties. A clear policy review and appropriate executive direction would help ensure that state resources are aligned with those obligations. Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your service to the people of our state.
