As your constituent, I'm proposing a legislative concept aimed at increasing transparency and accountability in local government: require transparency regarding the political party affiliations of candidates running in nonpartisan races.
Currently, many local elections—such as school boards, judicial seats, and municipal positions—are designated as "nonpartisan."
While the intention is often to keep local issues focused on community governance rather than national party politics, the reality is that voters frequently lack full context about a candidate's background, values, and political alignment.
I propose that the state legislature introduce a bill to establish the following:
Mandate all candidates running for nonpartisan seats publicly disclose their official voter registration party affiliation on their candidate filings and official election materials.
When voters step into the ballot box, they deserve complete information to make informed choices. Knowing a candidate's personal voter registration party affiliation helps constituents better understand their broader policy perspectives and philosophies.
The state legislature should introduce this common-sense measure to build greater trust and clarity in our electoral process. Please make this a priority.
