Challenge the Unlawful Gutting of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante
To: Sen. Lee, Rep. Kennedy, Sen. Curtis
From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT
July 19
On July 13, you stood behind President Trump as he illegally stripped over 3 million acres — more than 90% of protected land — from Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. You are not hiding this. Senator Lee has said the effort began over a year ago. Senator Curtis called it "a more appropriate interpretation of the Antiquities Act." You were there for the signing, and you are proud of it. That is exactly the problem.
The Antiquities Act gives presidents the power to designate monuments, not to gut them. Every legal scholar not on the payroll of an extraction industry knows this. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance is already in federal court challenging this action, and you should be ashamed to be on the wrong side of that case as sworn officials.
Your constituents see exactly what you did, and we will not forget it. Co-sponsor and champion America's Red Rock Wilderness Act. Prove me wrong.
