Family Planning Is Under Political Review. Nobody Asked Actual Families.

I am writing to demand immediate action to safeguard reproductive healthcare, bodily autonomy, and patient privacy against alarming federal intrusions into healthcare by administrative agencies and political activists. These coordinated actions directly threaten women, children, and families across the country: - Undermining Family Autonomy and Financial Stability: Access to reliable birth control is an economic necessity. Restricting family planning strips parents and couples of the ability to make practical decisions about when and how to grow their families based on their financial reality, career goals, and family caregiving capacity. - Restricting Emergency Care & Basic Contraception: Misclassifying standard healthcare like IUDs and emergency contraception as "abortifacients" is a bad-faith tactic to lay the legal groundwork for broad bans. This directly threatens a family's ability to access safe, reliable, FDA-approved birth control. - Weaponizing Environmental Rules to Limit Medicine: The EPA’s decision to place birth control and abortion medications on a federal water-contaminant watch list is a political maneuver that ignores the agency's own safety data. It creates an artificial panic to build a paper trail for future federal restrictions. - Putting Patient Privacy and Safety at Risk: H.R. 627 / S. 178 threatens to strip Medicaid family-planning funds unless states turn over granular abortion data to the CDC. Combining detailed demographic and geographic data creates a dangerous risk of re-identifying patients traveling for care, exposing them to legal harassment. This mirrors the Project 2025 proposal (pp. 455–456) to make abortion data reporting mandatory and tie it to family-planning funds. I urge you to take the following three concrete actions immediately: 1. PROTECT ACCESS AND SUPPLIES: Co-sponsor and pass the Right to Contraception Act (H.R. 999 / S. 422) to guarantee a statutory right to all FDA-approved birth control, and pass the Stop Comstock Act (H.R. 2029 / S. 951) to prevent the 1873 Comstock Act from being weaponized against mailing essential medical supplies. 2. DEFEND HEALTH DATA PRIVACY: Oppose H.R. 627 / S. 178 (Ensuring Accurate and Complete Abortion Data Reporting Act) and reject any efforts to condition state Medicaid family-planning funds on the surveillance or submission of granular, re-identifiable patient records. 3. EXERCISE CONGRESSIONAL OVERSIGHT: Launch formal committee investigations into HHS, the EPA, and the CDC regarding agency decisions to reclassify medications, misuse public health watchlists, cut Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program grants, and restrict Medicaid coverage for family planning providers. Birth control is fundamental healthcare. I expect you to co-sponsor these protective measures and hold federal agencies accountable to sound science and patient rights.
