Reject SAVE Act, protect voting rights for all citizens.
To: Rep. Doggett
From: A constituent in Austin, TX
April 5
The SAVE Act poses significant barriers to voter registration for millions of eligible American citizens, especially those from marginalized communities. By requiring documentary proof of citizenship, the bill would make the voting process excessively burdensome and risk disenfranchising voters who may not have easy access to documents like birth certificates or passports. According to a 2023 survey, an estimated 21.3 million voting-age U.S. citizens do not have or cannot easily obtain such documents. The additional requirements would be particularly problematic for people of color, married women who changed their names, rural residents distant from election offices, and those with disabilities or mobility issues. This legislation claims to address election integrity, yet there is no credible evidence of widespread illegal voting by non-citizens that would justify such stringent nationwide changes. Instead of protecting our democracy, the SAVE Act would likely suppress voter participation and erode faith in elections by creating unnecessary barriers. States like Kansas and Arizona that implemented similar laws have faced prolonged legal battles and seen legitimate citizens removed from voter rolls due to documentation issues. I urge you to reject the SAVE Act and any measures that would make it harder for eligible Americans to exercise their fundamental right to vote. Our nation's elections should be accessible, inclusive, and focused on maximizing participation from all citizens. This bill moves us in the opposite direction without justification. Please uphold the integrity of our elections by opposing legislation that imposes undue burdens on voter registration.
