Hands off Medicaid

To: Sen. Barrasso, Sen. Lummis, Rep. Hageman

I’m so disappointed that you voted to support the joint budget resolution. We all know that there is no way to meet those targets without cuts to Medicaid, and there is no one in Medicaid who can afford to have it cut. Stories of Medicaid fraud reflect fraud perpetrated by providers - but cuts will impact beneficiaries. The rare fraud that does happen doesn’t amount to anywhere near the amount that would need to meet the budget resolution. Cuts would curtail the very efforts already underway to find and fix fraud and improper payments. Let’s talk also about work requirements for Medicaid - which is really just more cuts. Here in WY, 63% of adults on Medicaid already work. Those who don’t are students, have caregiving responsibilities, or have disabilities or chronic conditions that interfere with work. Further, work requirements create a catch-22 in that Medicaid provides supports for prepare for, find, and maintain work - those are part of long term services and supports funded by Medicaid. Medicaid is far more cost effective than any other insurance plan. Cutting is will be harmful to many, reducing healthcare access, providers, and jobs across the state - and we are already facing hardship in employment, the economy, meeting healthcare needs, and having enough providers. Suicide rates are already too high, don’t you agree? Cutting Medicaid - a lifeline for many - might as well be homicide. Please do not support anything that will cut Medicaid!
