Demand Accountability and Protection of Our Democratic Institutions

To: Sen. Schmitt, Sen. Hawley

From: A verified voter in Kansas City, MO

June 11

I write to you as a deeply concerned citizen of your district and of this country. In just over 140 days, the current President has taken steps that not only erode democratic norms but actively threaten the foundational principles of our republic. This administration has fired government watchdogs—those responsible for holding power accountable and exposing fraud. It has launched a war not just on political opponents, but on culture, history, science, and knowledge itself. Public databases have disappeared. Transparency is vanishing. The President has delegitimized the free press and attacked the First Amendment, using the weight of his office to bully and discredit any organization that dares to speak truth to power. He’s threatening to defund universities unless they conform to a narrow, ideologically driven curriculum—an authoritarian move designed to control education and suppress free thought. He’s targeted law firms and judges, institutions that form the bedrock of a civil and orderly society. He’s gone so far as to call for the arrest of a sitting Governor simply because they were democratically elected—nothing more than a thinly veiled abuse of power. And now, in a disturbing echo of history’s worst strongmen, he is ordering our military—our American heroes—to participate in a grotesque birthday spectacle, abusing their service and loyalty to glorify himself. This is not patriotism. It is propaganda. History is watching. The people are watching. We will remember who stood up during this time of crisis and who stayed silent. We will remember who chose country over party, democracy over power, truth over convenience. Those who fail to act now will be judged not just by their constituents, but by generations to come. Enough is enough. I urge you to speak out. I urge you to push back. You were elected to defend the Constitution, not a cult of personality. The time for silence has passed. We need courage, oversight, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law—now more than ever.
