Ensure Huerta's release; Denounce ICE attacks on LA's peaceful protests

To: Sen. Husted, Rep. Joyce, Sen. Moreno

From: A constituent in Mentor, OH

June 9

I am horrified and heartbroken about ICE's attacks on PEACEFUL protestors exercising their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT. So today I urge you to denounce publicly the vicious ICE assault on SEIU Union President David Huerta. The ICE thugs, masked as always, injured Huerta, who then required HOSPITALIZATION. He was at the site of an ICE raid simply to passively observe and document the raid. The recent detention and injury of SEIU California President David Huerta during an ICE raid in Los Angeles is a disturbing violation of civil liberties and an attack on the labor movement. Their police state tactics are suspiciously timed and with their faces masked, it seems as if they are afraid of being recognized as the perpetrators of actions of dubious legality. We don’t know how many of these alleged ICE Officers are even real officers. They could simply be extremists, desiring to or paid to beat up and intimidate immigrants AND those trying to uphold civil rights in these raids. This is not the first instance of these thugs' actions and if it is not challenged, it will not be their last. As a community observer exercising his constitutional rights, Union President Huerta's mistreatment is unacceptable and emblematic of the cruel, indiscriminate enforcement actions of the Trump Administration, tearing families apart. Immigrant workers are vital to our society and economy, yet they face unjust criminalization. This injustice must end. I urge an immediate investigation into the excessive force used against Union President Huerta and a halt to these destructive ICE raids disrupting our communities and harming all working people. Upholding the rights of workers and immigrants is crucial for an ethical society that values human dignity over unjust policing. I call upon you to: 1. Ensure President Huerta's prompt release, and an apology from ICE and DHS’s leaders. 2. Identify and hold accountable each ICE officer involved, with their records made public. 3. Continue to speak out against such abuses of power that in this and other cases target labor leaders and even members of Congress. 4. Denounce and stand against ICE's anonymous and often illegal raids of terror against our neighborhoods. 5. Use your voice to counter the dehumanization of immigrants. These are our coworkers, our neighbors, mothers and fathers and children who play sports and instruments and video games and write and make art and love their families and communities. They are people seeking the American dream, just like the rest of us. Make that known. I’m sure you will hear from me about this again. ICE is not stopping. They are growing more violent. Thank you for your attention to this matter of 1st Amendment and Civil Rights. Remember your oath to uphold the Constitution.
