The proposed College Cost Reduction Act by House Republicans poses a severe threat to student loan borrowers, especially those with low incomes. By eliminating the existing income-driven repayment (IDR) plans that provide loan forgiveness after 20-25 years of payments, the bill would trap countless low-income borrowers in a lifetime of debt. The new "Repayment Assistance Plan" only forgives loans once the total amount paid equals what would have been owed under the Standard plan, an unrealistic goal for many struggling borrowers. This draconian measure disregards the financial realities faced by millions and perpetuates a cycle of debt that disproportionately burdens the most vulnerable. I urge you to reject any legislation that removes vital protections and pathways to relief for student loan borrowers, particularly those with limited means. Reforming higher education financing should prioritize affordability and accessibility, not punitive policies that doom generations to insurmountable debt.
