Trump Ends Body Cameras for DEA—Public Trust at Risk

To: Sen. Marshall, Sen. Moran, Rep. Estes

From: A constituent in Wichita, KS

May 12

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s decision to terminate its body camera program, a move made to align with President Trump’s recent executive order. This decision undermines efforts to enhance transparency and accountability within federal law enforcement agencies. Body-worn cameras have been instrumental in building trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. They provide an objective record of interactions, protecting both officers and civilians. The DEA’s abrupt cessation of its body camera program, without public announcement or clear justification, raises serious concerns about the agency’s commitment to transparency and accountability. Moreover, this decision is inconsistent with practices in other federal law enforcement agencies. The U.S. Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives continue to require body cameras, recognizing their value in promoting accountability and public trust. The DEA’s departure from this standard sets a troubling precedent and may erode confidence in federal law enforcement. I urge you to take immediate action to address this issue. Congress should conduct oversight hearings to examine the rationale behind the DEA’s decision and consider legislation to mandate the use of body cameras across all federal law enforcement agencies. Upholding transparency and accountability is essential to maintaining public trust in our justice system.
