I am writing to tell you I expect you to vote NO on the Grand Staircase management plan withdrawal. The sponsors of this resolution have greatly misrepresented the facts of how the existing plan was developed and the positive economic impact to the local community. The monument drew 936,000 visitors in 2024.
Grazing is still permitted on 93 percent of the monument. Mining industry employment in the surrounding counties has risen since 2001.
The Conservation Alliance, a coalition of roughly 200 outdoor businesses, opposes the resolution. Forty-four local businesses at the monument’s gateway, in Escalante and Boulder and Kanab, wrote Congress in opposition. 125 organizations signed a coalition letter to congressional leadership urging them to reject the CRA effort. The Grand Canyon Trust’s 2024 polling found that three in four Utahns, including a majority of Republicans, want to keep Grand Staircase-Escalante as a national monument. 89 percent of Western voters oppose reducing or removing national monument protections.
I expect you as my representative to vote No.
