No More Surge Pricing on Essentials

To: Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden, Rep. Dexter

From: A constituent in Portland, OR

October 13

I urge you to support legislation banning large grocery retailers from using consumers’ personal data to set individualized prices. Grocery corporations should not be allowed to exploit private data to squeeze more money out of people buying necessities. Families are already struggling with the cost of living. Using surveillance and algorithms to determine how much each customer can be charged is corporate greed dressed up as innovation. Seattle has already taken action, becoming the first U.S. city to ban this practice. Oregon should follow. Consumers deserve fair, transparent pricing, not corporations using personal information to maximize profits at the public’s expense. Please support legislation to end personalized grocery pricing and hold corporations accountable for putting profits ahead of the people they serve.
