As one of your constituents in Alabama and a citizen who cares deeply about the rule of law and the integrity of our institutions, I write to you with a straightforward request: Please vote “No” on the nomination of Ed Martin to serve as U.S. Attorney. You serve not only as Alabama’s junior senator, but also as a voting member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. In this moment, your vote carries real weight—and your voice, if raised with conviction, could make a meaningful difference in restoring trust in our justice system. Let’s be clear about who Ed Martin is: a partisan operator who has lent his voice and support to the very people who overran the United States Capitol on January 6th, threatening the lives of members of Congress—including you—and your staff. This was not a peaceful protest. It was an assault on democracy. And yet Mr. Martin has aligned himself with its apologists and enablers. Is this really the person we want to entrust with the solemn responsibility of enforcing federal law? He is, by any reasonable measure, one of the least qualified individuals ever put forward for this role—so much so that he edges out even Alina Habba, the New Jersey nominee with a résumé that reads more like a cable news guest bio than a federal prosecutor’s qualifications. Both should be rejected outright. Senator Thom Tillis has shown the kind of backbone this moment requires, publicly stating his opposition to politically toxic and unfit nominees. I urge you to follow his lead—not because it is politically easy, but because it is constitutionally necessary. This is your opportunity to demonstrate independent judgment and a commitment to justice. Please don’t squander it in the name of party loyalty. The people of Alabama—and the institutions of American democracy—deserve better than Ed Martin.
