Concern Regarding Recent Social Media Post
To: Sen. Slotkin
From: A constituent in White Lake, MI
March 11
I am writing as a concerned constituent to express my disappointment regarding your recent social media post in which you shared a Truth Social message from Donald Trump referring to Mark Carney as the “future governor of Canada.”
I understand that the post was intended to highlight the serious environmental threat posed by Asian carp and the impact these invasive species could have on the Great Lakes ecosystem. Protecting our waterways is an issue that matters deeply to many of us in Michigan, and I appreciate efforts to bring attention to it.
However, repeating language that frames Canada as if it were under U.S. governance is extremely concerning. Canada is a sovereign nation and one of our closest allies. Language suggesting otherwise, especially when amplified by elected officials, can feel divisive and destabilizing. Even when the intent is to highlight a policy issue, sharing or validating rhetoric like this risks normalizing language that undermines respectful international relationships.
I believe the threat of invasive species like Asian carp can and should be addressed directly without repeating or endorsing inflammatory language. As a leader representing Michigan, your voice carries significant weight, and many constituents look to you to model thoughtful and unifying communication.
I respectfully ask that you reconsider the decision to share content that includes rhetoric implying governance over another country and to continue advocating for environmental protection in ways that do not amplify divisive messaging.
