Protect Privacy, Independent Oversight, and the Integrity of Federal Government

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent anti fraud legislation advanced in the House and the broader actions being taken by Russell Vought and this administration to consolidate power within the federal government. No American supports fraud, waste, or abuse. Taxpayer dollars should be protected, and government programs should be accountable. However, these proposals appear to go far beyond legitimate fraud prevention and raise serious concerns about privacy, government overreach, and the independence of inspectors general. The legislation would expand government data sharing capabilities and create new centralized systems containing sensitive personal information. Civil liberties advocates and oversight experts have warned that such measures could expose Americans to privacy violations, data misuse, and wrongful disruptions of benefits and services. At a time when public trust in government is already strained, Congress should be strengthening safeguards, not weakening them. I am equally troubled by efforts to diminish the independence of inspectors general. Independent watchdogs exist to hold administrations of both parties accountable. Moving oversight functions into structures that may be more vulnerable to political influence undermines transparency and weakens one of the most important checks on executive power. Multiple lawmakers have raised concerns that these changes could further erode already weakened oversight institutions. Russell Vought has repeatedly advocated for concentrating authority within the executive branch and reducing the independence of institutions that provide accountability. Americans deserve a government that is transparent, professional, and accountable to the public, not one where oversight can be politicized or where personal data is collected and shared without adequate protections. I urge you to oppose efforts that weaken inspector general independence, threaten Americans’ privacy, or place politics above good government. Congress must defend the constitutional system of checks and balances and ensure that anti fraud efforts are pursued responsibly, with strong safeguards for civil liberties and independent oversight. Our democracy depends on independent oversight, strong privacy protections, and public trust in government institutions. Please stand up for transparency, accountability, and the rights of the American people before further damage is done.
