I am writing with grave concern about Donald Trump’s recent communication to the Prime Minister of Norway regarding Greenland. Threatening or coercing NATO allies, publicly confusing the Nobel Committee with the governments of Norway, Denmark, and Greenland, and framing Greenland as a “prize” the United States should control is not harmless rhetoric. It represents a serious foreign-policy risk that Congress must not ignore. Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. It is not for sale. Any attempt to pressure, coerce, or seize control of Greenland would violate international law, undermine NATO, and permanently damage U.S. credibility. The United States does not need to own Greenland. Greenlanders would lose autonomy and security, and the U.S. would lose allies, legitimacy, and standing in the world—possibly irreversibly. Dismissing this as bluster would be irresponsible. The President has repeatedly escalated rhetoric into action, used tariffs and threats as leverage against allies, and refused to rule out force. Congress cannot wait for logistics to be visible before acting. The constitutional role of Congress is to prevent reckless escalation, not to react after the fact. Any movement toward coercion or military action against allies must be treated as a red line. Republicans in Congress, in particular, have the authority and responsibility to enforce that line through oversight, funding restrictions, and clear public repudiation. If the President continues down this path, constitutional remedies—including impeachment and removal—must be on the table. Preventing territorial threats or invasions is not optional; it is Congress’s duty. Failure to act would make Congress complicit in the destruction of alliances that keep Americans safe.
