I am writing to urge you to support the extension of Temporary Protected Status for Haitian nationals currently residing in the United States. The ongoing crisis in Haiti makes it impossible for these individuals to safely return to their home country.
Haiti continues to face unprecedented instability. Gang violence has overtaken much of Port-au-Prince, with armed groups controlling an estimated 80 percent of the capital. The country lacks a functioning government, with no elected officials currently in office. Basic services including healthcare, education, and law enforcement have collapsed in many areas. Food insecurity affects more than half the population, and cholera has reemerged as a public health threat.
Allowing TPS to expire would force thousands of Haitian nationals to return to these dangerous conditions. Many have built lives here, contributing to their communities through work and family ties. They pay taxes, own businesses, and have children who are American citizens. Forcing their return would separate families and eliminate the remittances they send home, which provide critical support to relatives struggling to survive.
The United States has a long history of providing temporary refuge to people fleeing crisis situations. Haiti clearly meets the criteria for TPS designation given the extraordinary conditions preventing safe return. Extending this protection is both a humanitarian imperative and consistent with our values as a nation.
I ask that you publicly support TPS extension for Haiti and work with your colleagues to ensure this protection continues. These individuals deserve the opportunity to remain in safety until conditions in their homeland improve enough to allow for dignified return. Your leadership on this issue would make a meaningful difference in the lives of Haitian families across the country.
