The members of the Jan. 6 committee served their country honorably by investigating the attack on the U.S. Capitol and efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. With the incoming administration making concerning statements about retribution, it is imperative that these public servants be protected from potential legal jeopardy for carrying out their constitutional duties. Granting preemptive pardons to committee members would uphold the principles of free speech and legislative independence enshrined in the Constitution. Failure to do so could have a chilling effect on future congressional oversight and the ability to uncover uncomfortable truths. The American people deserve full transparency, and those who provided it through the Jan. 6 probe must not be punished for their diligence and patriotism.
