I am concerned about the unregulated, unfettered development of AI systems by for-profit companies. No one really understands how these systems produce AI, and yet decisions about jobs, war, healthcare, and other aspects of society are being influenced by AI. These models are being developed at a breakneck pace, along with hardware and infrastructure, but we don’t know the full implications of such a technology. Millions of people could lose jobs due to automation. Some of these models could pose major security risks. Bad actors could harness their power to commit crimes and cause mass destruction. On top of that, the race to AGI could have vast unintended consequences. We may get amazing breakthroughs, but we could also get an AI that humans don’t understand and cannot control. The AGI may have different goals than us or there may be bugs that cause misalignment. We need our lawmakers to take action to keep these tech companies from developing dangerous technologies. We need guardrails and government oversight.
