Uphold the Constitution — No One Is Above the Law

To: Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden, Rep. Hoyle

From: A constituent in Cottage Grove, OR

October 18

I am writing to urge you to stand firmly against any actions or interpretations of law that place the President—or any elected official—above accountability. The United States was founded on the idea that we have no kings. Our leaders serve the people; they are not sovereigns immune from the rule of law. When power goes unchecked, democracy itself is at risk. Recent events have shown how fragile the balance can be when those in office test the limits of authority and seek to act without oversight. Congress must not allow the concentration of power in any one branch or person. Please defend the constitutional principles that make our republic strong: separation of powers, checks and balances, and equal justice under law. Uphold your oath to the Constitution, not to any individual. America cannot afford to trade liberty for loyalty to one person. History will remember those who stood for democracy when it mattered most. I ask you to be one of them.
