I am writing as a constituent to urge you to defend the integrity of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Section 106 has served our nation for decades by requiring federal agencies to consider the effects of their actions on historic places before decisions are made. It does not prohibit development. Instead, it ensures that agencies consult with Tribal Nations, state and local preservation experts, and the public to identify practical ways to avoid or reduce unnecessary harm. I am deeply concerned by proposals that would weaken this process by limiting meaningful consultation, narrowing the scope of review, or postponing mitigation until after project approval. Historic buildings, archaeological sites, cultural landscapes, and places of community memory are irreplaceable. Once they are damaged or destroyed, they cannot be recreated. Efficient permitting and infrastructure development are important goals, but they should not come at the expense of thoughtful stewardship of our shared heritage. Please oppose efforts to weaken Section 106 protections and support a review process that is both efficient and accountable. Thank you for your service and for your attention to this important issue.
