Federal Employees Salary Increase.

To: Sen. Alsobrooks, Rep. Elfreth, Sen. Van Hollen

From: A constituent in Elkridge, MD

October 13

I urge Congress to include a meaningful federal civilian employee salary increase in the upcoming federal budget, at least 3.8% Federal employees across the country perform essential work that supports our national security, economy, infrastructure, public services, and the effective operation of the federal government. Many employees also serve in highly specialized positions requiring years of experience, professional qualifications, security clearances, and significant responsibility. Competitive compensation is critical to maintaining this workforce. Federal employees compete with the private sector, state and local governments, and other employers for qualified professionals. When federal salaries fail to keep pace with inflation, living costs, and compensation available elsewhere, agencies face greater challenges recruiting and retaining experienced employees. A salary increase would also recognize the increased responsibilities many federal employees have assumed throughout their careers. Employees who remain in government often develop substantial institutional knowledge and expertise that can take years to replace. Losing experienced personnel can result in vacancies, increased recruitment and training costs, and disruptions to agency missions. Federal employees and their families are also directly affected by rising costs for housing, healthcare, transportation, food, and other necessities. Providing a fair and competitive salary adjustment would help federal employees maintain financial stability while continuing to serve the American people. Supporting a federal civilian pay increase is an investment in the workforce responsible for implementing the laws and programs established by Congress. A strong and effective government depends on attracting and retaining qualified people who are willing to dedicate their careers to public service. I respectfully ask Congress to prioritize a meaningful federal civilian employee salary increase in the upcoming budget and ensure that federal employees receive compensation that reflects their responsibilities, experience, and continued contributions to the nation.
