The Department of Health and Human Services closures of Head Start regional offices in Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Boston is going to have an immediate detrimental effect on children and families, and the programs who serve these families. This year, Head Start celebrates 60 years of providing help to families to attempt to break the cycle of poverty by providing early readiness schooling, while also tending to childrens' socio-emotional and nutritional needs.
Five out of the ten regional offices had all staff laid off with no transition plan, no transparency, and no clear path forward. To add insult to injury, deputy press secretary Emily Hilliard said program directors can “reach out to their designated regional offices or the appropriate Head Start program contact within the Administration" for questions related to grant funding and other support. HOW? They were all fired!
The new fiscal year is rapidly approaching, and families' lives are being upended. I urge you to take immediate action and investigate these closures.
