I am writing as your constituent to demand that you vote NO on the SAVE America Act.
This legislation is a dangerous solution in search of a problem. The Heritage Foundation’s own database proves that non-citizen voting is statistically non-existent, yet this bill would disenfranchise millions of eligible American citizens to "fix" it.
Specifically, I urge you to oppose this bill for the following reasons:
- It Implements a De Facto Poll Tax: By requiring Documentary Proof of Citizenship (DPOC), this bill forces voters to spend upwards of $130 on passports or navigate costly, bureaucratic hurdles for birth certificates. For the 21 million Americans who currently lack these documents, this is a financial barrier to the ballot box that violates the spirit of our Constitution.
- It Targets Women and Marginalized Voters: Over 60 million American women do not have a birth certificate that matches their current legal name due to marriage or divorce. Forcing these citizens to produce a paper trail of marriage licenses just to register to vote is an insult to their citizenship and a targeted act of suppression.
- It is an Unconstitutional Federal Takeover: Despite claims of supporting states' rights, this bill mandates federal oversight of state voter rolls and forces states to use the Department of Homeland Security's flawed SAVE database. This is a direct violation of the authority our Founders gave to states to manage their own elections.
- It Criminalizes Election Workers: Adding criminal penalties for administrative errors will further hollow out an already exhausted election workforce, leading to aggressive purge-first policies that remove eligible voters from the rolls.
The true intent of this bill is not election integrity—it is a desperate attempt to manipulate the electorate by creating hurdles for those less likely to have specialized documentation. I expect you to stand on the side of democracy and reject this voter suppression effort.
