Oppose the Interstate Obscenity Definitions Act

To: Rep. Matsui, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in West Sacramento, CA

August 11

The Interstate Obscenity Definition Act (IODA) poses a grave threat to free expression and individual liberties by effectively criminalizing consensual adult content online. This legislation's attempt to define and police "obscenity" on the internet disregards the First Amendment rights of content creators, viewers, and the broader digital community. The vague and subjective nature of "obscenity" definitions risks silencing marginalized voices and harming communities who rely on digital platforms for education, empowerment, and connection. LGBTQ+ individuals, sex educators, and sex workers would be especially vulnerable. Moreover, this bill represents an alarming overreach of federal power into private lives, echoing outdated moral censorship attempts repeatedly rejected by courts and the public. Reject the IODA and uphold free speech, privacy, and the rights of consenting adults to legal online expression. Our constitutional freedoms depend on it.
