Congress passed a sweeping Russia sanctions law last month with overwhelming bipartisan support, and Trump signed it. Now he's cutting diesel deals with Putin and directing Treasury to suspend those same sanctions for six months. You need to hold the administration accountable and demand full enforcement of the law Congress wrote.
The deal doesn't even solve the problem it claims to fix. Experts at the Energy Policy Research Foundation say redirecting Russian diesel to the U.S. won't lower prices — it just displaces Russia's existing customers, keeping global prices where they are. Diesel still sits at $6.28 a gallon nationally. Meanwhile, Putin gets a lifeline for his war economy at exactly the moment his refineries are under pressure from Ukrainian strikes and his diesel output has dropped 30%. Sen. Blumenthal is right: this makes us complicit.
Zelenskyy called it a smokescreen. Trump publicly thanked Putin while ignoring questions about Ukraine. Use every tool available — oversight hearings, sanctions enforcement legislation, budget leverage — to force compliance with the law Trump already signed.
