Speak out against political abuse of the pardon power

To: Rep. Bergman

From: A verified voter in Marquette, MI

October 19, 2025

I’m deeply concerned about President Trump’s decision to commute George Santos’s sentence. The pardon power is meant to correct unfair sentences, not serve as a prize for political allies. When clemency becomes a reward for loyalty, it undermines trust in equal justice and weakens the institutions that conservatives have long claimed to defend. Our country’s strength comes from respect for the rule of law, not from personal or partisan allegiance. I urge you to speak out for the principles our republic was built on: honesty, accountability, and fair application of justice. Please work to ensure that no president, of any party, can use the pardon power as political currency. Thank you for your service to Michigan and for standing up for integrity in government.
