I write to urge you to act without delay to protect Social Security, SSDI, and SSI from the agenda embedded in Project 2025, and to hold accountable those who mislead the public about their role in it.
President Trump pledged repeatedly that he would “never touch” Social Security. Yet credible reporting now indicates that Russell Vought, Trump’s current Director of the Office of Management and Budget and one of the principal architects behind Project 2025, is leading efforts to revise eligibility rules in a way that would make it harder for seniors, widows, and disabled Americans to qualify for benefits. Such policy changes could strip assistance from hundreds of thousands of individuals who have paid into the system over decades. Truthout+2NASW+2
The American people deserve candor. Rather than distancing himself from Project 2025, President Trump is increasingly aligning with it—appointing its authors to critical roles and signaling intent to overhaul the nation’s central anti-poverty safety nets. Proposals such as removing age as a factor for disability eligibility or raising the full retirement age are only early steps in what appears to be a larger agenda to weaken, and ultimately privatize, Social Security. Congress must take these steps to defend the integrity of these programs:
1. Publicly demand clear disclosures from the President and his advisers about their coordination with Project 2025.
2. Hold hearings to examine any proposed rule changes to Social Security, SSDI, and SSI, with full transparency about their projected impacts on beneficiaries.
3. Enact binding commitments (in statutory or budgetary form) that no cuts, delays, or eligibility restrictions will be imposed on Social Security, SSDI, or SSI benefits.
Americans have earned their Social Security contributions. They expect every member of Congress, Democrat and Republican alike, to uphold those earned rights—without succumbing to hidden backroom deals or ideological cuts. I respectfully ask you to defend and preserve these essential programs.
