I want to express my grave concern about the recent public intervention by far-right activist Laura Loomer and President Donald Trump in the personnel decisions of Microsoft Corporation, specifically relating to the company’s President of Global Affairs, Lisa Monaco.
Lisa Monaco, formerly Deputy Attorney General under President Biden and Homeland Security Advisor under President Obama, joined Microsoft in 2025 to lead global affairs and cybersecurity policy. In July, Laura Loomer began a coordinated campaign on social media calling for Monaco’s firing, explicitly tying her past government roles and alleged policy positions to supposed risks for Microsoft’s government contracts. Loomer also highlighted her notification to President Trump, after which she claimed credit for influencing his stance.
On September 26, 2025, President Trump posted on Truth Social, demanding that Microsoft “immediately terminate the employment of Lisa Monaco,” describing her as a “menace to U.S. National Security” and citing her access to sensitive government information. President Trump referenced her prior service in Democratic administrations and stated that her security clearance had been revoked earlier in the year, along with others from former administrations. These statements were amplified by Loomer, who again pressured Microsoft’s leadership and celebrated the President’s public demand.
This episode raises troubling questions about executive branch pressure on private corporations, the use of public office to target individual employees of major federal contractors, and the influence of partisan activists over government actions. Loomer’s direct communication with the President and subsequent White House amplification of her position appear designed to exert improper leverage on a private company’s internal management.
I urge Congress to examine:
- Whether it is appropriate for a sitting President, especially in coordination with partisan activists, to publicly demand firings from private companies with pending government contracts.
- The risks posed by political targeting of private sector employees with past government service.
- The implications for the independence of both U.S. corporations and government procurement processes when such pressures are exerted.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
