Rein in destructive tariff wars threatening US economy

To: Rep. Dexter, Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden

From: A constituent in Portland, OR

April 10

These sweeping tariffs imposed by the Trump administration are causing severe economic turmoil and represent a drastic overhaul of long-standing trade policies. Hitting over $2 trillion worth of imports with dramatic tax hikes will push effective tariff rates in the US to the highest level in over a century. This protectionist approach threatens to spark a global trade war, with major US trading partners like China already retaliating with steep counter-tariffs on American goods. The consequences could be devastating - key consumer goods face potential price spikes of over 30%, global stock markets are reeling, economic growth is jeopardized, and analysts warn of widespread damage as US sales drop, trade shrinks, and production falters abroad. American businesses tied to global supply chains find themselves paralyzed by the uncertainty. Talks with trade partners have only just begun and face an uphill battle given the administration's resistance to exemptions. I urge you to take immediate action to curtail the president's unilateral trade powers and work to de-escalate these tariff battles before they inflict further harm on American consumers, businesses, and the economy. Protectionist policies risk undoing decades of integrated trade relationships critical to US prosperity. A rules-based system that promotes free and fair trade must be restored through diplomatic negotiations, not destructive tariff wars. The economic disruption from these reckless actions demands a coordinated legislative response.
