Please Support H.5177 / S.2865: An Act Relative to School Library Standards

To: Sen. Velis, Rep. Pease

From: A constituent in Westfield, MA

June 18

I am writing to express my strong support for H.5177 / S.2865, An Act Relative to School Library Standards. School libraries are more than rooms filled with books. They are places where students learn to think critically, explore new ideas, develop research skills, and discover a lifelong love of reading. Access to professionally managed school libraries helps ensure that every student, regardless of their background or zip code, has equitable access to high-quality educational resources. Establishing statewide standards for school libraries would help ensure that students across Massachusetts have access to well-maintained collections, qualified library staff, and learning environments that support literacy, information literacy, and academic success. At a time when students are navigating an increasingly complex information landscape, school libraries play a vital role in teaching them how to evaluate sources, think independently, and engage thoughtfully with differing perspectives. Strong library standards also support teachers by providing instructional partnerships and resources that enrich classroom learning. Investing in school libraries is an investment in students’ education, curiosity, and future success. I respectfully urge you to support H.5177 / S.2865 and help ensure that every student in Massachusetts has access to a high-quality school library. Thank you for your time, your service, and your consideration.
