Federal retirement and health benefits are earned through dedicated years of public service. Slashing these hard-earned benefits would undermine the appeal of pursuing careers protecting our nation. Congress should uphold its commitment to federal workers instead of demoralizing and undercutting this essential workforce. Penalizing federal employees and retirees by eliminating annuity supplements, increasing pension contributions, and hampering due process protections is an affront to those who devoted their careers to serving the American people. The proposed $50 billion in cuts would jeopardize the financial security of millions who made sacrifices with the promise of retirement stability. Reductions in cost-of-living adjustments, retirement calculations, and health benefit support ignore the solemn obligation to honor agreements made when these public servants accepted their roles. Recruiting and retaining a talented federal workforce will become increasingly difficult if their compensation is continually eroded. Rather than balancing budgets on the backs of civil servants, Congress should prioritize preserving the benefits they have earned through honorable careers of national service over corporate giveaways and irresponsible tax cuts. Upholding commitments to federal workers is a moral and practical imperative for a well-functioning government.
